SUMMARY:Building with Bats: Transforming Buildings into Ecological Infrastructures
DESCRIPTION:European research and funding policies have increasingly sought to orient research and innovation towards transformative change. A prominent expression of this agenda is the development of Nature-Based Solutions\, which promote the idea of building with nature and challenge the conventional separation between construction and nature conservation.   \nIn this talk\, Lucas Brunet examines a specific type of technology\, ecological infrastructures\, which seek to transform existing infrastructures to accommodate more-than-human life\, and turn inert material devices into living objects. The analysis draws on six months of ethnographic research in the Netherlands on the detection and identification of bats in buildings.   \nBrunet attends to the practices through which the built environment can be turned into ecological infrastructures through the construction of bat boxes and bat towers. The case of bats provides an opportunity to examine what is promised by transformative change\, and how a technology presented as transformative is implemented in the messy and feral world of more-than-human life.  \nAbout the speaker  \nLucas Brunet is a Research Assistant Professor at LISIS (Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Sciences Innovations Sociétés)\, in INRAE (France’s National Research Institute for Agriculture\, Food and Environment) and University Gustave Eiffel.   \nAbout the event \nThis is an in-person event part of the STS Department (TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology) Doctoral Colloquium Fall 2026. If you are not registered for the Colloquium but would like to attend the Seminar Series with Lucas Brunet\, please email contact@trm.tum.de.  \nTransforM’s Seminar Series is a space for cross-disciplinary conversation on transformative technologies and their socio-economic impact. It brings leading academics and international experts for open\, research-driven discussions on the technologies reshaping our economies\, institutions and everyday lives.

SUMMARY:How to Study Algorithmic Systems and AI as a Social Scientist
DESCRIPTION:This Workbench takes methodological and conceptual questions of studying AI into a hands-on format. It will begin with an input from Prof. Lee drawing on his Field Guide for Analyzing Artificial Intelligence (Lee 2025). Participants will then work with their own research projects to map and reflect on the methodological and conceptual approaches currently used\, or potentially useful\, for studying AI and algorithmic systems across TransforM. \nInteractive exercises will focus particularly on questions such as: \n\nWhat aspects of AI systems become visible or invisible through different methodological approaches?\nWhat are our methods attuned to noticing?\nWhat kinds of actors\, infrastructures\, practices\, and relations can they capture – and what might remain invisible?\n\nBy comparing approaches across disciplines and empirical sites\, the Workbench will enable participants to identify methodological blind spots\, exchange practical strategies\, and explore new possibilities for studying AI-driven transformative technologies. \nAbout the speaker \nFrancis Lee is Professor of Science & Technology Studies at Södertörn University in Stockholm\, Sweden. His research examines how digital technologies—such as algorithms\, artificial intelligence\, and big data infrastructures—shape our understanding of the world. \nHe currently co-directs the research platform on Synthetic Data in WASP-HS and the InterSynth Lab\, where his work explores how synthetic data are made credible and trustworthy through practical chains of reference between models\, data\, and the worlds they represent. He is engaged in several research projects that you can find more information about here.  \nAbout the event \nThis is an in-person event aimed at researchers from across the TransforM Cluster\, particularly those working on AI\, algorithms\, digital infrastructures\, and other computational or digitally mediated transformative technologies. \nRegister for the event here by 16 October\, 2026. \nPlease note that the Workbench will be limited to 25 participants. Everyone who has secured a spot will receive a confirmation by email.
