SUMMARY:Understanding Academic Responses to Research Security: Attitudes\, Norms and Perceived Control in UK International Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:International research collaboration is central to modern science\, yet an emerging “security turn” in science and technology policy is placing new obligations on academics as they pursue cross-border partnerships. Evidence on how these research security measures shape academic practice remains limited.   \nCornelia Lawson\, Professor of Economics of Science and Innovation at the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research (MIOIR)\, will join the TransforM Seminar Series to talk about her research that investigates the performance and career paths of researchers and inventors\, as well as inter-organizational and inter-sectoral research collaboration and knowledge transfer.  \nOne of her recent papers examines the conditions under which UK academics use research security practices and adjust international collaboration behavior in response to security concerns. The findings highlight awareness-building and peer-level engagement as key levers for embedding research security into academic practice.  \n  \nAbout the event  \nThis is a hybrid event. No registration is needed.  \nOn site: ZEW – Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research\, L7 1\, 68161 Mannheim\, Room: Heinz-König Hall \nOnline: Join the seminar via this Teams link.   \nTransforM’s Seminar Series is a space for cross-disciplinary conversation on transformative technologies and their socio-economic impact. It brings leading academics and international experts for open\, research-driven discussions on the technologies reshaping our economies\, institutions and everyday lives.  \nThe event is organized by TransforM – the Munich Center for Transformative Technologies and Societal Change in collaboration with ZEW – Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research.

SUMMARY:Building with Bats: Transforming Buildings into Ecological Infrastructures
DESCRIPTION:European research and funding policies have increasingly sought to orient research and innovation towards transformative change. A prominent expression of this agenda is the development of Nature-Based Solutions\, which promote the idea of building with nature and challenge the conventional separation between construction and nature conservation.   \nIn this talk\, Lucas Brunet examines a specific type of technology\, ecological infrastructures\, which seek to transform existing infrastructures to accommodate more-than-human life\, and turn inert material devices into living objects. The analysis draws on six months of ethnographic research in the Netherlands on the detection and identification of bats in buildings.   \nBrunet attends to the practices through which the built environment can be turned into ecological infrastructures through the construction of bat boxes and bat towers. The case of bats provides an opportunity to examine what is promised by transformative change\, and how a technology presented as transformative is implemented in the messy and feral world of more-than-human life.  \nAbout the speaker  \nLucas Brunet is a Research Assistant Professor at LISIS (Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Sciences Innovations Sociétés)\, in INRAE (France’s National Research Institute for Agriculture\, Food and Environment) and University Gustave Eiffel.   \nAbout the event \nThis is an in-person event part of the STS Department (TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology) Doctoral Colloquium Fall 2026. If you are not registered for the Colloquium but would like to attend the Seminar Series with Lucas Brunet\, please email contact@trm.tum.de.  \nTransforM’s Seminar Series is a space for cross-disciplinary conversation on transformative technologies and their socio-economic impact. It brings leading academics and international experts for open\, research-driven discussions on the technologies reshaping our economies\, institutions and everyday lives.

SUMMARY:Tech. When Silicon Valley Remakes the World
DESCRIPTION:TransforM invites you to our Seminar Series where sociologist Olivier Alexandre will take us on a revealing tour of Silicon Valley to show how an industry works\, and how that industry works upon the world.   \nBased on extensive ethnographic research on this industry’s singular milieu\, its prominent personalities and vibrant networks\, his research captures the way its denizens live\, think\, relate\, and innovate\, and how they shape the very code and conduct of business itself.   \nEmbedded deep within the community\, he reports back on the motivations\, ambitions\, and radical vision guiding tech companies. From the conquest of space to quantum computing\, engineers have recast the infinitely large and small. Some scientists predict the end of death and the replacement of human beings with machines. But at what cost? Alexandre sees a shadow hanging over the Valley\, jeopardizing its future and the economy made in its image. SUMMARY:A Moment of Choice: Knowledge Production in an Age of Computation
DESCRIPTION:In a time of relentless pursuit of artificial intelligence\, this TransforM Seminar Series seeks to temper the glittering promises of computation and take seriously the promise of contingency as an analytical virtue. “It could be otherwise” has long been a rallying cry for those who seek to resist technological determinism and articulate other stories about technology\, progress\, and modernity.  \nHow\, then\, can the social sciences help articulate stories other than those of impending (AI) salvation or doom? How can we help articulate a space for reflection and choice in a world drenched in stories of the extreme?  \nThis talk explores how the social sciences can attend to – and help articulate – moments of choice in computational knowledge infrastructures. Through three vignettes focusing on agency\, absences\, and thresholds\, the talk explores how the social sciences can help open up possibilities for caring computation. In doing so\, it takes seriously the possibilities for creating a reflexive ontological politics of computation.  \nAbout the speaker \nFrancis Lee is Professor of Science & Technology Studies at Södertörn University in Stockholm\, Sweden. His research examines how digital technologies—such as algorithms\, artificial intelligence\, and big data infrastructures—shape our understanding of the world. \nHe currently co-directs the research platform on Synthetic Data in WASP-HS and the InterSynth Lab\, where his work explores how synthetic data are made credible and trustworthy through practical chains of reference between models\, data\, and the worlds they represent. He is engaged in several research projects that you can find more information about here.  \nAbout the event \nThis is an in-person event. SUMMARY:How to Study Algorithmic Systems and AI as a Social Scientist
DESCRIPTION:This Workbench takes methodological and conceptual questions of studying AI into a hands-on format. It will begin with an input from Prof. Lee drawing on his Field Guide for Analyzing Artificial Intelligence (Lee 2025). Participants will then work with their own research projects to map and reflect on the methodological and conceptual approaches currently used\, or potentially useful\, for studying AI and algorithmic systems across TransforM. \nInteractive exercises will focus particularly on questions such as: \n\nWhat aspects of AI systems become visible or invisible through different methodological approaches?\nWhat are our methods attuned to noticing?\nWhat kinds of actors\, infrastructures\, practices\, and relations can they capture – and what might remain invisible?\n\nBy comparing approaches across disciplines and empirical sites\, the Workbench will enable participants to identify methodological blind spots\, exchange practical strategies\, and explore new possibilities for studying AI-driven transformative technologies. SUMMARY:From Chip War to AI Race: Power\, Profit and the Geoeconomics of Transformative Technology
DESCRIPTION:The intensifying rivalry between the US and China is unfolding on new terrain. In the late 2010s\, the rivalry centered on the US’s attempts to limit China’s access to advanced chips as well as the supply chains required to make them. Now the focus of this struggle is shifting to the related area of the development of AI models to achieve international technological and industrial leadership.   \nJoseph Baines\, Senior Lecturer in International Political Economy at King’s College London\, will join the TransforM Seminar Series to talk about the geoeconomics of AI and what it means for Europe.  \nThis talk follows the global production networks that link advanced chips\, cloud infrastructure\, AI models\, and their deployment across industrial sectors. Where is value created and ultimately captured in AI-centered production networks? Which companies are positioned to benefit from geoeconomic conflict over these networks? And who bears the social and ecological costs?   \nIn illuminating the emergent winners and losers of the AI race\, this talk also offers insights into what space remains for Europe to shape AI development in ways that serve public needs.    \n\nAbout the event \nThis is an in-person event. No registration is needed.  \nTransforM’s Seminar Series is a space for cross-disciplinary conversation on transformative technologies and their socio-economic impact. It brings leading academics and international experts for open\, research-driven discussions on the technologies reshaping our economies\, institutions and everyday lives.

SUMMARY:Wild AI: Tracking Animals and Datafication in the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:Quantities and kinds of wildlife everywhere are decreasing rapidly. This global decline of wildlife populations has been accompanied by a radical acceleration in the quantity and types of data being collected about animals. Wildlife are increasingly datafied (that is\, subject to data gathering and surveillance\, made measurable and quantifiable) through new technology such as AI\, machine learning\, and tracking devices.   \nEmily M. Wanderer\, Associate Professor & Director of Graduate Studies at the Department of Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh\, will join the TransforM Seminar Series to talk about the datafication of wildlife and its consequences.  \nDrawing on ethnographic research with ecologists\, computer scientists\, and wildlife managers\, Wanderer follows what practitioners often call “the data pipeline”: data about wildlife\, from its production by ecologists in the field to its consumption and use by scientists and computer engineers in machine learning and AI programs.  \nWhile this metaphorical pipeline is often represented as the means by which data extracted from the activities and bodies of wild animals may seamlessly transition to computational analysis and prediction\, Wanderer analyzes the messy materiality of this transfer: to extend the pipeline metaphor\, she shows how the demands of pipeline construction are reshaping scientific practice as well as the leakages\, intrusions\, and unexpected twists and turns that data takes as people\, technology\, and wildlife come together to craft and analyze it.   \nShe considers what it means for AI to be produced outside of the for-profit world of big tech\, and investigate the ideas\, cultural categories\, and histories that shape machine learning and AI about non-human animals and their consequences for humans and wildlife.   \nAbout the event \nThis is an in-person event.
