SUMMARY:TransforM helps kick-off a new cohort of Friedrich Schiedel Fellows at TUM
DESCRIPTION:On April 30th\, TransforM will co-host the kick-off of the third round of Friedrich Schiedel Fellows alongside the TUM Think Tank and the Hochschule für Politik München. This fellowship program has the goal of supporting early career researchers at TUM\, at the advanced PhD and Postdocs stages\, to explore how we can employ emerging technologies for the benefit of society\, and ensure that emerging technologies are developed responsibly\, human-centred\, and democratically. \nThis years’ selection and review process will focus additionally on the role of transformative technologies and invited researchers to submit ideas related to the different focus areas of the TransforM cluster. \nFrom improving digital health and urban infrastructures\, to employing AI responsibly in educational settings\, to providing a deeper understanding of what drives innovation ecosystems\, these fellows will develop their research to empowering innovators\, fostering collaborations and creating public interest technology.

SUMMARY:TransforM hosts Roundtable with Martha Minow on Justice and Transformative Technologies
DESCRIPTION:On the 28th of April\, TransforM\, alongside the TUM Think Tank and Hochschule für Politik\, will host a special roundtable with distinguished guest Martha Minow. Prof. Minow holds the 300th Anniversary University Professorship at Harvard University and is the 2025 recipient of the TUM Friedrich Schiedel Prize for Social Sciences and Technology for her exceptional and field-defining contributions at the intersection of law\, social sciences\, and technology. Known as a leading human rights scholar\, as well as figure bringing scholarship to issues of identity\, race and equality\, the TransforM Cluster was delighted to get a chance to discuss the impacts of transformative technologies with her.  \nTransforM PI’s Silke Beck\, Sabina Leonelli and Sebastian Pfotenhauer\, along with Sandra Cortesi (TUM) and Christian Fieseler (BI Norwegian Business School) will join Prof. Minow on the roundtable to explore questions around technology\, justice\, and governance.

SUMMARY:Futuring our World: An Imaginative Ideathon
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Marlise Horvath Schneider and Dr. Amy Clare will host ‘Futuring our World: An Imaginative Ideathon’ at South by Southwest (SXSW)\, a music\, cultural\, and tech festival in Austin\, Texas. This event will be co-organized with the City of Munich and the German Haus\, which aims to create more dialogue between the US and Germany. \nBuilding off methods and aims of the TransforM Cluster of Excellence\, this workshop will query how we understand the presents and imagine ideal futures from various industry perspectives–economy and industry\, art and culture\, health and environment. Each sector will feature two mentors (economy and industry with Prof. Dr. Klaus Bengler [TUM\, Germany] and Dr. Marlise Horvath Schneider [TransforM\, Germany]\, art and culture with Arne Totz [27 kilometres\, Germany] and Alena Mayer\, Germany [Caldo Worldwide]\, health and environment with Dr. Amy Clare [TUM\, Germany] and Evelyn Mitchell [City of Austin\, USA]. Bringing together stakeholders across multiple industrial and geographic dimensions\, Marlise and Amy will guide mentors and participants to imagine desirable futures – together– by sketching and jotting during discussions. After moving through each guided sector\, participants will be challenged to draw connections between the sectors\, demonstrating that presents and futures cannot be narrowly and individually decided and that futuring is an active process that requires collective decision making and imagining. The workshop will be concluded with a discussion of how to pursue collectively desirable futures by understanding the clear entanglements of the economy\, culture and our surrounding environments. \nThe ideathon will ideally be repeated in other contexts with various participatory groups to create a megamap of future imaginaries and collective ideas.

DESCRIPTION:On February 6th\, the Cluster of Excellence – Munich Center for Transformative Technologies and Societal Change (TransforM) – will kick off with a public event at the Oskar von Miller Forum. \nMembers of the TransforM Cluster\, along with experts from academia\, government\, civil society\, and the public at large\, will gather to discuss the role of transformative technologies in shaping the future. The event will be joined by representatives from the City of Munich\, LMU\, TUM\, the ifo institute\, ZEW\, and the Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation SPRIN-D\, the event brought responsible innovation research to the forefront of this public discussion\, with the goal of broadening Munich’s (and Germany’s) approach to technology and innovation. \nCluster’s Spokesperson Professor Sebastian Pfotenhauer will walk the audience through the goals of TransforM\, the motivation for creating such a cluster\, and the pathways to impact that TransforMaims to build. TUM Executive Vice President for Research and Innovation Professor Gerhard Kramer will give welcome speech\, outlining the achievements of TUM as a University of Excellence and the important role of social science research for advancing research also in technical fields. \nA panel discussion will follow\, moderated by TransforM Cluster Co-Spokesperson Professor Hanna Hottenrott and joined by Fabian Kors (City of Munich)\, Oliver Falck (LMU)\, Rafael Laguna de la Vera (SPRIN-D)\, and Sabina Leonelli (TUM).
